Starting July 31, 2026, when a buyer contacts you about a defective item and asks for a remedy, you must offer them a choice between a repair and a replacement. If the buyer chooses repair, the warranty is extended by 12 months. This rule applies to consumer goods in general.
What you need to do
1. For consumer goods in general:
If you are a professional seller offering products to buyers located in the EU and a buyer asserts their legal rights during the warranty period, you must meet the following obligations:
If an item is reported as defective or not as described, you must offer the buyer a choice between a repair and a replacement.
If the buyer chooses repair, the warranty is extended by an additional 12 months. You must also inform the buyer of this extension before carrying out a repair.
We recommend that you review and update your warranty procedures and all published terms and conditions to reflect this change.
Purchases made before July 31, 2026 are not subject to these requirements.
2. Additional requirements for certain products covered by Annex II:
Additional requirements may apply to certain products in the categories listed in Annex II of the Directive, including washing machines, washer-dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, televisions, vacuum cleaners, dryers, welding equipment, cell phones, tablets, cordless phones, servers and data storage products, as well as products equipped with batteries intended for light electric vehicles (such as electric bikes, electric scooters and similar devices).
These requirements apply if you are the manufacturer established in the European Union. If the manufacturer is located outside the EU, your repair obligation must be handled by an actor established in the European Union. This is the manufacturer's authorized representative in the EU or, failing that, the importer, then the distributor if there is no importer.
For products covered by Annex II
Consult the EU ecodesign rules applicable to your products to understand which spare parts, repair information and services you must offer, as well as how long they must be available.
Offer repair services for the full duration of your repair obligation.
On eBay, post repair information, including details about coverage, repair options and standard repair prices. You can include this information in the seller comments section, the item description, and the order confirmation email.
Even if the repair obligations set out in Annex II do not apply to you, you can still help your buyers by telling them where to go to have their product repaired.
Thank you for selling on eBay.
