Since December 28, 2024, the European universal charger directive has been in effect. It aims to reduce electronic waste by designating a single type of charger for certain rechargeable devices. This directive applies only to professional sellers.
Professional sellers who list certain electronic devices for the first time on the markets of the European Union and Northern Ireland must:
- Offer only electronic devices with a USB-C port
- Offer the option to buy the electronic device without a charger, if a charger is included in the listing
- Display a pictogram and a label in their listings
As of April 28, 2026, these requirements will also apply to laptops.
