Update on Canadian sales taxes

Hello,
In accordance with the directives announced in the 2021 Canadian federal budget and the recent changes to provincial sales taxes, eBay Canada Limited (“eBay”) now collects Canadian sales taxes (GST, HST, QST, PST) on items sold to buyers in Canada.
Since July 1, 2022, for all tangible goods sold in Canada, eBay collects Canadian sales taxes (GST, HST, QST, PST) from buyers in Canada on behalf of sellers in Canada (regardless of their registration status) and remits them to the relevant tax authority. eBay will remit all taxes collected to the relevant tax authority, as required by applicable law.
Detailed reports will be provided each month to sellers to specify the taxes collected by eBay. These reports will show the federal and provincial taxes collected from buyers for your sales, including the tax that eBay will remit directly to the relevant tax authority. Sellers who were not already required to collect and remit taxes are subject to no new requirement. For sellers who were required to be registered for taxes and to collect them, this is indeed a mid-year change. However, the administrative burden has been eBay’s responsibility since July 1, 2022.
The data related to your sales on eBay will not be shared with provincial and federal authorities.
We have read your comments and your emails, and here are a few points we’d like to highlight :
- Some members asked to receive an email confirming receipt of the billing agent authorization form. We are reviewing all forms received to make sure they were completed correctly. Thank you for your patience during this process. We will respond to everyone. Note that only sellers registered for GST/HST or QST must fill out this form. If you did not receive this form, you can request it by email at CanadaGST/PST@ebay.com.
- The tax requirement is based on the transaction, not the item. It therefore applies to both new and used items. For each individual transaction, the buyer pays GST/HST/QST/PST separately, as applicable.
- We know that the Bullion and bars category should be tax-exempt, and we apologize for this technical error if you had to pay taxes. eBay will refund buyers for any taxes collected in excess and will be responsible for any taxes collected in short. eBay uses third-party software and tax rules to ensure the proper taxation of all items listed for sale on its site.
- eBay cannot provide any financial advice regarding your tax return. Please contact an accountant or tax professional.
- The seller tax tables were disabled for transactions within Canada on July 1, 2022. As of that date, eBay will collect GST, HST, PST and QST on all transactions within Canada and remit the taxes collected to the appropriate government or tax agency.
By changing the responsibilities related to the collection of sales taxes in this way, eBay aims to reduce the administrative burden on sellers with respect to invoicing and collecting the correct sales taxes on taxable sales made through the platform. It also aims to comply with all applicable laws. eBay will now assume this responsibility for all sellers – not just unregistered sellers – in order to provide a simplified experience for the entire community. Questions and concerns related to tax collection will be handled by eBay Customer Service. You can consult our tax information page here.
eBay will also be responsible for collecting Canadian sales taxes on digitally delivered goods sold to buyers in Canada, including goods from sellers outside Canada. eBay’s Terms of Use have been updated to reflect this change and provide information on compliance with applicable laws.
Additional information on federal measures is available on the CRA website or by calling the help line: Contact us: GST/HST for digital economy businesses – Canada.ca.
Please consult your tax advisor if you have any questions or concerns about these changes.
As always, thank you for selling on eBay.

·2 years agoI don’t see the need to charge taxes on shipping, since we already pay them when we go to the post office. Long live the land of double taxes!!!! Thanks Justin, the idiot!!

·2 years agoI find it completely unacceptable to have to pay provincial and federal sales taxes when I buy a **USED** item on eBay.
In everyday life, these taxes are charged only when buying a new item. Why isn’t it the same on eBay?
